Atanas Ourkouzounov
Doberman Yppan :32 pages
This latest book by Bulgarian Ourkouzounov is a set of 15 relatively short pieces that use musical ideas that firstly are not often used in teaching material, and secondly provide an opening to this composer’s more advanced material of which there are many books available
The sort of material he is writing here that rarely sees the light of day in tutor books is for example, in Septlude, that is a piece of 7/8, Dialogue Modale , with multiple hammer- ons and pull- offs in many different positions, Danse a Cinq, in 5/8, and Cercle Chromatique , that has consistent runs and hammer – ons in a chromatic fashion. Every piece has something new to teach players, and whilst they are not as difficult to play as a lot of his other pieces, none of them are easy in the true sense of the word, mainly because of this composer’s very modern harmonic qualities that do take some reading and then playing, because your fingers are never landing where you expect them to.
Of course this kind of harmonic style won’t suit some people but if you are happy with ultra – modern writing you will perhaps really enjoy his individual style and find these pieces lots of fun.
