Israeli – Born Shani Inbar has here brought us an album with a lot of variety and with music over a large span of time from Francesco Canova Di Milano, an early 16th century composer, to Peter Karkowski from the 20th Century.

The opening Mallorca of Albeniz, originally for piano, is a lovely start. She does put a certain emotional feeling in places that I hadn’t noticed before from other players, and so it was interesting start to this album.

Malcolm Arnold’s 1971 Fantasy for Guitar was written for Julian Bream and is cast in seven movements: Prelude, Scherzo, Arietta, Fughetta, Arietta, March, and Postlude, across which Arnold reprises some themes a number of times. The piece shows how Arnold, with Julian Bream’s help creates a complex mixture of colours, textures, and effects across its 11minute duration, and is a relatively rare piece that I don’t feel many players have recorded before.

Then we jump back 400 years to the Italian Lutenist Francesco Canova Di Milano’s Ricercare LVII,   one of more than 100 pieces he wrote for his instrument and a nice contrast to the other pieces on this recording.

Two pieces from Francisco Tarrega take us back to the late 19th Century, and one of the guitar’s master player/composers. Both these pieces are nicely done and the recordings are very clear and close.

Then we find one of Segovia’s extremely brilliant composers who wrote for him many works, even though he couldn’t play the guitar! Mario Castelnuovo – Tedesco’s work here is one of his very best and beautifully played.

Peter Karkowski is a German guitarist composer whose name I haven’t personally come across before. This 5 movement work is modern but relatively friendly and therefore not atonal. It covers many feelings and emotions along its 7 or so minutes and is a nice addition to this recording.

The album closes with Joquin Turina’ s Sevillana , another piece written for Segovia by a non  guitar playing composer.A lovely work , it is a great close to what is essentially a lovely CD full of superb playing, a nice and clear recorded sound and one that many of you will definitely enjoy!
