Thomas Seeck
Bergmann Edition: Score only: 20 pages
This book is unusual in that each of the three instruments is for a different line – up of players, which is a situation I can’t ever remember seeing before, and therefore the first movement Quiraing is for solo guitar, the second Isle of Skye is for a melody instrument and guitar, and the final movement , Linn of Dee is for three guitars, which raises the point , of exactly who would buy the book, unless they had a small group including three guitars and possibly a solo instrument of some kind?
Quiraing is an Allegro 4/4 in D and is pleasantly folksy in style with enough jumping around in the music to make it a little tricky, but worth getting your hands around.
Isle of Skye is marked Airy and is a 4/4 in B Minor, and in the middle reaches an accelerando and then a very active Attaca , con Spirito, before returning to its opening Airy and Calm section to close. Again this is a very pleasant and slightly unusual piece, and as stated before the composer has left which instruments play the lead part, entirely up to you.
The final Linn of Dee for 3 guitars is quite a complex Am Allegro in 2/4 time with plenty of rhythmic and melodic diversity to keep the players occupied. This is definitely the hardest of the three pieces to perform, but all three movements can be found on YouTube, should any of you be interested! The music is engaging and a little different from lots of other music you might be playing, and so I can see that this little suite would have an interested audience , should it be performed on stage.
