Matteo Carcassi : 25 Studi Melodici e Progressivi Op60 : 6 Capricci Op26.

Lucio Matarazzo

The 25 Studies of Matteo Carcassi are of course extremely well known pieces and are great exercises as well as being rather pleasant to play. Here Lucio Matarazzo plays the entire set. Usually each piece is set in one style so that patterns are repeated throughout the individual piece, take for example the very beautiful No3 which is an arpeggiated set of triplet quavers with exactly the same all the way through. What makes, for example this piece really memorable is the lovely melody and the somewhat unexpected harmonies that crop up throughout it. The set as a whole is a standout piece of writing simply because every one individually is completely different. You might think however that it is one thing playing these studies, but quite another listening to them on your player.  You’d be quite wrong however as they are very ear catching and you will moreover wonder at the performer’s talents at playing these pieces and transforming them into a fine set to listen to.

The 6 Capricci Op26 are less well known , although they occupy the same sound – world , and thus are very melodic and full of lovely musical details and therefore are equally pleasant to listen to .

Lucio Matarazzo has been recorded very clearly, everything is in great detail and therefore you get to really enjoy the pieces at their very best. This is a worthwhile recording of some lovely music by Carcassi.
