The playing here of Andrew Wilder immediately strikes the listener as really adept and the music itself fits the guitar quite a lot better than I actually anticipated, being written for keyboard originally for although I have arranged works for guitar from keyboard, I have at times had to be very selective, especially when the writing was so keyboard orientated.
The recording begins with a Mozart Allegro in D Major and immediately sets the scene, as the playing is elegant, very much an Allegro and the recording quality very good indeed. The following Adagio in C Major is beautiful in its emotional qualities and just goes to show the listener how great a composer for the guitar Mozart might have been because these pieces utterly suit the guitar , and dare I say it, sound better to me than on the original keyboard version.
Then Haydn comes into the frame, with two movements from his Sonata in D Major, instantly recognisable as him, and quite different from the Mozart in its writing style, and once again effortlessly produced on our instrument.
And so the album continues, with every track really effective on the guitar, for there is nowhere where you think that this doesn’t sound very good on the guitar, because all the tracks sound wonderful and very true to their original. This is a fine album, with some superb playing, and will suit anyone who likes this era of music
