Giacomo Susani

Doberman – Yppan: 3 pages

I have seen a few of this man’s pieces before and have always found them musical and pleasant to play. This latest piece is, of course, contrapuntal which can sometimes mean a little technical but not particularly pleasant to play. However he has done exactly what it says on the title, i.e. made it a poetic and musical piece of writing.

It is not long, only 52 bars in length, but has two basic ideas, the first beginning with two contrapuntal voices, with the second voice repeated the first, an octave down and two crotchets later (which does change constantly throughout the section) and then the second idea which is not contrapuntal but has chords and a number of voices, and is quite a contrast to the first idea. The two themes do alternate before finally a senza tempo climb up the fingerboard with a morendo, leaves us on some harmonic notes to close.

It is a nice sounding piece, not actually very easy to play, but well worth the effort of getting to know it, should you like this man’s compositions!
