Jean – Maurice Mourat

Les Productions D’Oz: 6 pages

When you see a title with the word Choro in it, you know what you are going to see, rhythm wise, but what I didn’t expect here is to find that it is so similar in chord usage and melody to another piece, the title and composer of which completely escapes me, but I am certain that you all would recognise what I am saying immediately, should you play this piece here.

As this piece stands, it is in Am with a middle section in the tonic Major. It is, as you would expect, full of semi – quavers with a great deal of the time using a semi quaver, quaver, semi quaver grouping, to get the Choro effect. So in this first section, you do find a number of pull- offs, that can be quite tricky to the less talented players amongst you. The melody does move around quite a lot with bass note crotchets underneath with a few awkward places that do not have any fingering marks whatsoever and so those moments are not immediately obvious where they are to be played.

The A Major section continues in very much the same vein before a slightly altered minor section returns this time involving a few triplet semi – quaver rhythms before a coda that does lead to climactic final few bars.

I was a little disappointed with this piece, mainly because it does remind me of this other nameless( at the moment) piece, and so therefore I can only say that should you try this piece, it is pleasant enough with lots of Choro sounds, and maybe you will see things utterly different from me.
